Headline acts Christine Anu, Z-Star and homegrown talent Eves Karydas will join some of the region’s most talented up and coming musicians in a Cairns Festival program that promises a little something for all ages, genres and tastes.

Two stages will take over Cairns’ CBD with the Esplanade Main Stage and Festival Stage at the Court House Gallery front lawn transformed into free live music hubs.

The Tanks Arts Centre will also feature a number of ticketed performances including alt-rock luminaries Jebediah and Magic Dirt, The Tropical Soul Party featuring The Bamboos plus DJ Emma Peel, Telenova and Jazz Under the Stars at Flecker Gardens.

The Festival Launch Night: A Cultural Rising on Friday, 23 August at the Court House Gallery will officially get the 10-day party started with performances from hip-hop artist Normey Jay and the legendary Christine Anu, who has enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades.

The focus will shift to the Main Stage on Saturday 24 August with an afternoon of performances leading up to the start of the Grand Parade.

Introducing…. – a Flame.Arts program providing opportunities for emerging artists under 25 years will see nine rising stars take to the stage from 1pm to 4.45pm.

Artists include Emma Reeve, Emily Lane, Vid Sehgal, Mia Rose, Heyfever, WeHateLoveSongs, Hysteria, General Sherman and Rob Howe.

Main Stage also welcomes the return of Eves Karydas with her unique indie pop sound complemented by deep, emotive lyricism and UK-talent Z-Star, known for her electrifying presence and soulful voice that blends rock, blues and soul.

For Z Star, performing is about creating unforgettable experiences, especially when people are hearing her music for the first time.

“When you are doing a show like this, the opening track has to set the pace and lure the listener into the magical universe of the sound.

“It also helps the energy onstage when you are performing to a crowd that loves live music – they are already up for it.”

She said Cairns Festival goers could expect an electrifying “blues, rock, soul, garage, funk” experience.

“Influences from late sixties and early seventies (Hendrix/Zeppelin/Doors/Alabama Shakes) mashed up into modern dynamic dance rock grooves.

“We absolutely love what we are doing, and this vibe can be felt like a magical river that flows offstage right into your hearts.

“Live music brings so much joy and togetherness, it's another form of therapy for the masses.

“Expect to feel inspired, mesmerised, energised and above all well and truly entertained,” she said.

Wrapping up the opening weekend on 25 August will be the Sunday Sundown at the Festival Stage featuring Abi Muir, John Buttigieg, Grace Jones Trio, Jelly Oshen Trio and headliner Jacotene, with her soul-stirring vocals and magnetic stage presence.

‘World Beatz’ will be celebrated on Friday, 30 August featuring artists’ Stu Harcourt, Bad Boys of Uke and The Amazonas while Hometown Harmonies on Saturday 31 August will see Vivien Aisi, Tessa Devine Band, Lady Valiant and The Pad Boys all perform.

Closing out Cairns Festival will be Shaun Kirk headlining Blues + Folk at Festival Stage on Sunday, 1 September, supported by Ella Hartwig, Jannah May and Ben Wilson.
