Allow me to introduce myself, Fred McGrady, a candidate for the Moree Plains Shire Council for the 14 September 2024 elections.
I am a proud descendant of the Gomeroi Nation, in western NSW.
As a candidate for the next Local Government elections, for Moree Plains Shire Council, I attended today’s meeting at the Moree Town Hall.
I wanted to understand what the Premier and the Local Council were discussing.
Whilst I was in attendance, I was tapped on my shoulder from behind me.
I turned to see why, and the person standing next to me, pulled open his coat, and directed me to look down at his gun and badge.
He did not say anything, just motioned me to move away from where I was standing.
There were many white peoples in front of me and much closer than me, to the Premier.
I said to the under cover police officer, I have hearing aids and I wanted to hear what was being said. That was totally ignored.
I then said to the police officer, are you racially profiling me? He didn’t respond.
Given I was the only identifiable Indigenous Australian in the group of people.
I wish to make an official complaint as an Indigenous Elder of 72 years, the intimidation and disrespect showed to me.
If you wish to work with Aboriginal people in their communities, how do you expect Aboriginal people like me to work with your Government, should Aboriginal be successful LG Candidates.
I have been a Labor voter and union member all my working life.
I shall continue to share this experience on Facebook and other social media outlets until I have an apology for the humiliation caused today to me.
